The east and west chambers at the lake end of Gatun locks are often busy at the same time as one ship journeys toward the pacific and the other toward Caribbean. The one on the right in the west chamber has come up through the three locks, while the one at the left in the east chamber is just beginning the 80 ft. descent which will take it through the three locks of Gatun. the rise from the first lock to the last and the lake varies during the year but is seldom lower than 80 ft., or higher than 87 ft. Which is the peak height for the water to date. Gatun locks of the Panama Canal zone.
