St. Elmo Hotel (Turlock, Calif.)
Description:
A view of business buildings and one dwelling on both sides of West Main Street. Note the two tier hitching rail where two
horses harnessed to buggies have been tethered while their drivers presumably are shopping. A proposal for a city water system
was suggested in 1908. Work progressed slowly and the use of elevated water storage tanks continued. On the far right side
of Main Street is the St. Elmo Hotel with its tall spire. Directly behind that building is a large round water storage tank.
Three more are visible behind buildings on the left side of the street. The wooden tank next to the house is encased in a
tower which helped slow water evaporation and provide cool storage areas for perishables such as butter and milk.
