First draft of letter, in note-book 59 (62) Martinez, Oct. 21, 1900. My dear Mr. Slifer: The birch specimens from Cook
Inlet came a week or two ago. The bark is a fine large piece, and the leaves and flowers, which l sent to Prof. Sargent for
the Arnold Arboretum, are just what were wanted. I am very much obliged to you, and Prof. Sargent will be delighted, it is
so hard to get such specimens in season from those remote places. I congratulate you on your restoration to health, your
experiences in the Northland, and on your success in making a way into the life work you have chosen. And now, with best
wishes, Very truly yours, John Muir 02890
