Rough draft of letter Sept., 1900 . My dear Mrs. H oward : I would gladly go to Tamalpais and a thousand times farther
to stay the ruthless destruction of the forests you refer to. But, alas, all land thereabouts is private property, and what
more can I do in the way of protest and efforts to make public opinion for the defense of the trees than I am doing? I am
now at work on a book on the forest parks and reservations which I hope to get out soon. I hope, however, that a block of
redwoods may yet be saved for a public park, and will be glad to accept the invitation of your boys to take a trip with that
object in view at the first opportunity I can find. John Muir 02724
