Autobiography & Reminiscence of Joseph Blunt Larcombe, San Leandro, 1901. The Society of California Pioneers
Larcombe was born in New York City, April 12, 1827. He was employed as a carpenter and was one of the mechanics that worked
on Grace Church in New York City. On January 28, 1849, Larcombe set sail for California on the ship "Tahmaroo" with Captain
Richardson. He arrived in San Francisco July 1, 1849 after a brief stop in St. Katherines. Larcombe was part of a company
of ten that immediately set out to explore the gold diggings. Due to a misleading map provided by the New York Herald they
accidentally wound up in Stockton instead of their intended destination, Sutterville. Once in Stockton they set up camp and
mined in various locations in Tuolomne County. Their company disbanded after two months and Larcombe returned to San Francisco
to resume work in his old trade. Larcombe worked in his brother-in-law's shop as a carpenter until 1852. He then embarked
in the lumber business, but soon departed this for another try at the mines. This time Larcombe went to the head waters of
the Feather River and was very successful. From 1858 to 1889 Larcombe was active in mining (Frazer River & Washoe Silver),
hotel keeping, and carpentry. He eventually retired to San Leandro
