FF DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR UNITED STATES GEOLOGICAL SURVEY WASHINGTON, D. C., Jan 13, 1902. Mr. John Muir, Martinez,
California. My dear Muir: I was very glad to get your letter of the 2nd, and what a sublimely modest fellow you are Yes,
you made the mistake of your life in not joining me at Flagstaff and going to the Canon with me. I spent a fortnight at the
Canon and in the forests bordering it, and if you had been with us we would have seen a whole lot and had a royal good time.
I am sending you by this mail a copy of Dutton's monograph on the Grand Canon, and a copy of the atlas accompanying it in
sheets. The panoramic view of the Canon from Point Sublime in three sheets is the finest piece of drawing that I know. It
was made by Holmes. I would suggest that you trim these sheets to fit one another and mount them together on cloth so that
they can be tacked up on the wall of your den. I also send, in separate envelope, a few indifferent photographs which I took
last summer. There has been a whole lot printed about the Canon but in my judgment this monograph of Dutton's and Powell
's narrative, which you already have, are the two classics. With kindest regards to you and yours, Sincerely yours,
Henry Gannett 02940
