Original letter returned to Miss Katharine M. Graydon Martinez, Oct. 8. 1894. My dear despot: Don't make any definite
arrangements either for my dinner or bed next Saturday, as I don't know whether I can be in time for your early dinner or
whether I may not sleep elsewhere. And now that I am fairly in for the crazy show you may invite as many guests as you like
from 10 to 1000. I can't imagine what makes me so helpless in your hands. You and Janet Moores can make .me do anything, and
strange to say you require just what above all others I most devoutly shrink from. Strange that such a witch should be all
these enchanting years undouble. Ever your much-enduring man, J. M. Envelope addressed Miss Katharine Graydon, 2530 College
Avenue, Berkeley, Cal.
