Description:
Photograph of Richard L. York at the Festival of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Held in the parking lot next
to 2427 Haste, the event began at 4 pm Saturday and was the first public event sponsored by the Free Church. Around 1000 attended.
During the intermission, York, Chuck Robert and David Stone processed through the crowd, led by two men with censors (one
being Gar Smith, veteran peace activist and environmentalist). They stopped to wash the feet of 12 hippies. York read the
prayer by Michael Quoist, "I would like to rise very high, Lord, / Above my city, above the world, above time. / I would
like to purify my glance, and borrow your eyes..." They blessed the crowd, sprinkling them with holy water, then stopped at
the feet of the 10-foot effigy of the Virgin Mary.
