evening I spent in listening to your talk about the big trees, and the other great and beautiful things of California at the
Players Club. I have read your book on California with great interest and pleasure. Mrs. Warner keeps it on her table as one
of her Scriptures. She prefers above everything else in the book the chapter on the wind in the trees. I am engaged just
now, with my brother Charles Dudley Warner, in preparing a collection of good literature taken from sources all over the world,
to be embraced in thirty volumes. The selections are prefaced by critical and explanatory articles by various writers. We
have some of the best names among the current literary workers of the day, and we would very much like to receive an article
from you, to be signed by you, on some author whom you may like to write upon. Do you know any botanist whose biography you
could write for the purpose? Is there anything in the works of Linnaeus which we could have translated, and which would make
