61 First draft of letter, in note-book Martinez. Feb. 15, '05. Mr. Eldred J.D.Hercus, Dear Mr. Hercus: I have often
thought of you since our first pleasant meeting on the Red Sea steamer, especially during my long rambles through the beautiful
and novel scenery of New Zealand. I have not yet written a word of my travels for publication, but hope I shall find time
ere long to write a book, or at least a few magazine articles on the most interesting things I have seen, and I hope also
to see something of South America before my long rambles are brought to a close. Heartily wishing you and your wife success
in your good work, and hoping that you will make me a visit should you ever come to California, I am, Faithfully yours,
John Muir P.S. By to-day's mail I send you a copy of The Mountains of California. 03098
