6. This is a typed transcript, bound into a volume, of the member's
autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society
of California Pioneers. The original handwritten version exists in the member's
biographical file. This reminiscence includes a reference to a photograph of the
member in a set of bound volumes. It appears that the photographs in this set were
dispersed throughout the regular photography collection, but the photographs
referenced in the related materials may or may not be these same photographs. The
period of time represented by this biography is 1849 to 1900. This brief account
provides an outline of the life of John T. Young. Some background family history
is provided. Mr. Young also provides the names of people and companies he did
business with as a carpenter in San Francisco. Some information is given regarding
his limited experience mining in Tuolumne County.

Autobiography & Reminiscence of John T. Young, Eureka, Cal., 1901. The
Society of California Pioneers
John T. Young was born in Killingsley, Connecticut on June 6th, 1829. In
November 1848 he became a member of a company formed to go to California after
hearing news of the discovery of gold. They incorporated as the "Naragansett
Trading and Mining Company". The company of eighty-four members sailed from Boston
on the bark "Velasco" on February 14th, 1849 and arrived in San Francisco on
October 7th, 1849. Upon arrival the company split into groups of four to ten men.
Mr. Young's party proceeded to Chinese Camp, Tuolumne County. After a few weeks of
mining Mr. Young decided to abandon his efforts and move to San Francisco and seek
work carpentering
