letterhead January 14 1904 Mr John Muir Martinez Cal. Dear Sir In re-reading Our National Parks lately, I recalled
an article published some months since to the effect that a New Giant Sequoia had been discovered; as I remember, with a girth
of 152 feet. The story was told with circumstantial details that read all right. Was it a hoax, or true? If true, May I ask
a line from you saying when where, and by whom found? And height and circumference? Thanking you in advance I remain Yours
truly H P Child No. The above is not true. The German Engineer Mr Subig was fooled by his two volunteer assistants who
when back of the tree coiled up 50 or 60 ft of the steel tape-line The true size is 97 feet girth at 4 ft above the ground.
Yrs truly, John Muir
