Description:
Melons began to be grown near Turlock between 1900 and 1908. The season began in February when the ground was prepared for
seeding by disking, harrowing and or plowing. Generally seeding was done during the first week of April. Melons took between
90 to 100 days to reach maturity. Usually the farmers were able to pick (harvest) ripe melons in a field once a week for
five weeks. The end of July was typically the peak of the melon harvest. A variety of melons were grown commercially in
Stanislaus County but Turlock was known as the "Watermelon Capital of the World", between 1911 to 1925.
