Description:
Handwritten letter from Haruko Sumi to [Afton] Nance, 1942 Aug 12. D. 3, B. 64, U. 44, A. 4 Santa Anita Assembly Center, Arcadia, California. August 13, 1942
Dear Mrs. Nance, How are you? I hope the heat is not bothering you too much. I am writing to ask a big favor of you.
As you probably know that my husband, Hiramitsu Sumi, is interned for the duration of the war at New Mexico. I am not in
a very good health lately and the children seem to be always getting ill from this and that, so I need my husband very badly
to help me here. I need a a reliable person who will vouch to his activities and his loyalty to this country. Will you please
write – I mean have an affidavit made for him so that it will help to to release him. He has not done anything disloyal
to this country but he just happened to be the treasurer of the Japanese language school when the war broke out so he was
taken in. I think you know him well enough so will you please have the affidavits made & have it notarized. Enclosed is
$2.00 to partially cover the fee for the notary. I need three affidavits. I wish to thank you for all you have done for
Norimichi in the past. Thank you very much in advance. I am waiting for the affidavits very anxiously. Sincerely
Yours. Haruko Sumi Hiromitsu Sumi ISN-25-4-J-575-CI Br.5 – Comp. 3 – Co. 9 My husband’s address. Lordsburg
Internment Camp, Lordsburg, New Mexico To whom it may concern: Mr. Hiromitsu Sumu has been a member and a leader of
a Japanese and Nisei community located on the Palos Verdes Estates, California. The group pioneered in the area and made
profitable and productive gardens of land which had formerly been given over to rocks and cactus. This community was outstanding
in its fine attitude and cooperation toward the Caucausian group. It actively supported the Red Cross and all other community
projects. Mr Sumi’s son attended the Malaga Cove School at which I have been a teacher for two years. He was in every way
a good school citizen, gave every evidence of fine home training, and participated actively in the affairs of the school.
His parents gave the school full cooperation at all times.
