Description:
Handwritten letter from Paul H. Kusuda to Afton Nance, 1942, May 29. B 19 - 9 – 2 Manzanar Reception Center Manzanar, California May 29, 1942 Dear Mrs. Nance
Thank you very much for the books which arrived finally. Yesterday, I went to the Post Office after receiving notice that
a package was waiting for me. I have already begun Ybarra’s, “Young Man of Caracas.” It is very interesting, and no doubt,
I shall finish it soon. How may I repay you for all you have done? It seems as though I am always indebted to you and I
wish that I could do something. Anyway ---- thank you very much. Don’t you know yet that I am not of the thinking variety
of human beings? Believe me ---- I don’t usually analyze anything. I am a moron! About the education in Santa Anita, I
have heard that credit will not be given to the people who take the courses. There’s is a heated discussion at the present
time (Issei, Kibei and myself (Nisei)), so it is hard for me to concentrate on writing. So please excuse the erratic trends
of thought. I am following your last letter, so this writing is much more jumpy than usual. Now, I am at the part where
you mentioned the straw mattress. I am not disgusted with it because it isn’t too bad, I guess. And ---- I suppose that
I haven’t any of that pioneer spirit. I suppose that I am a later model made during the era that America was becoming soft.
For about two or three weeks, I have been corresponding with Miss Swain and she is helping us a lot, I suppose, with the
tutoring system which we have tried to establish. The only trouble is that all high schools will not give credit for correspondence
work. So, that happens to hamper our work a lot. Besides, it is so near the time for the school semester to end that we
are rushed to complete our communication with the various high schools. Soon, I shall complete “My Life.” Now, I am about
twelve years old. I shall send you a copy of the first installment. See if you can get something out of it. I didn’t.
As soon as I write more of my story, I shall send it to you. What did you mean by, “The carbon paper – anon -- …”? Hasta
la vista, Paul H.
