Description:
Handwritten letter from Paul H. [Kusuda] to [Afton] Nance, 1944, Jan 19. 607 W. Oakdale Ave. Chicago 14, Illinois Wednesday January 19, 1944 Dear Mrs. Nance,
This will be a short note asking a favor of you. It seems that you are doing things for me perpetually so I really shouldn’t
ask this of you, but this time, it won’t be for myself. My sister wishes to leave Manzanar sometime in March. At present
she has no suitcase of her own and cannot get one via mail order means. She asked me to send her one, but it seems foolish
to ship her one from this distance. Would, or rather could you purchase an inexpensive piece for her and ship it to her?
Please bill me for all charges. My sister says that she does not want an expensive piece so any makeshift model will do,
I’m sure. At any rate, she is not in any kind of a position to quibble even if she wanted to do so, and I know she doesn’t.
Again, my work hours have been changed. Now, my hours are from 2:45 pm through 1:15 a.m. That’s only a ten hour day, so
I work only fifty hours per week since I work but five days per. If I don’t change jobs (and I may soon because I’m getting
“fed up” with the Forelady), I may try to find part time work. I won’t go to classes in February. After all, I’d look rather
silly in class without uppers. By the way, the job is almost complete now. I have four teeth left in the uppers — the front
four. Now, my room-mates call me “Rabbit.” Soon, they’ll be calling me “Gramps.” Yesterday, I went to the University of
Chicago again. I had an appointment with Dean Redfield of the Social Sciences Department. He told me that all restrictions
on Nisei for the Univ. of Chi. were off about ten days ago. The Sixth Service Command which takes in the Chicago area so
notified him. I won’t be able to go until about June because of my teeth-yanking business. However, in June I may go to
the Univ. of Chi. provided I have some capital and a scholarship. I hope to have about $200 to $300 by that time even after
paying my dentist bill. That means that I’ll really work like the dickens to earn all I can. That’s about all the news
for now. I’ll write again. Thanks, Paul H.
