Description:
Handwritten letter from Mutsuo [Hirose] to [Afton] Nance, 1944 Feb 5. Newell, California Feb 5, 1944 Dear Mrs Nance Thank you very much for your swell letter. The condition
over here is much better than a month ago. Most every department went back to work, except the curfew hasn’t been lifted
(have to stay in our block from 7 P.M) The high school started last week so now I’m going to both American and Japanese
language school. I have four period in high school so far, because the high school is not completely made yet. I go to high
school up to 2:45 then I go to Japanese school from 3:00 to 5:00 so my time is pretty well filled up. The mountains which
surround this camp is now covered with snow and little by little peoples are starting to play softball or catch so I guess
the baseball season is just around the corner. I bet by now you are tired of traveling. I know I did when I rode on trains
for weeks now – days I feel sick just by looking at the railroad tracks. Hope you are well and having a swell time doing
your work. Sincerely Yours Mutsuo
