Description:
Handwritten letter from Mizuye Hirose to [Afton] Nance, 1943 Jan 8.8K-7-E Amache, Colo. January 8, 1943 Dear Mrs. Nance, Thank you for the thoughtful letter, and also very kind one also.
I hope your cousin at Woosung had just as good New Years Day as we had. Japanese traditional omochi did not show that day
but chicken fried in Japanese sauce with another thing was served to us. January 3 we had the omochi Japanese rice cake.
Maybe the internee’s family can be send to there father, so they may live together. I find the weather over here not far
different from Palos Verdes weather. The blizzards are cold I think but I just watched from the window. There is frost on
the ground every morning but we are getting used of the weather here. Morning I wear my coat to school but in the afternoon
I wear my regular sweater. January 1st I just had a thin blouse on allday, but it wasn’t too cold. So the weather is good
enough. I think we went to the best of all camp for we able to go shopping outside, stove inside every unit and enough coal,
foods are good and a real school is being biult. One of the Colorado Senator objected for building the school building
but never the less they are working on it so I hope I can graduate from there. Can you find out if the camera’s are still
at the Palos Verdes Police station. In side this camp we are able to have our camera now so if you can find out about our
camera y can you drop us a line. Yours most sincerely Mizuye Hirose
