Description:
Handwritten letter from George Ohno to [Afton] Nance, 1943 Jan 20. Poston Arizona Jan. 20, 1943 Dear Mrs. Nance, Greetings from Poston Arizona. How is everybody back
home in Southern California? We are all fine in Poston. In Poston today, the weather is very cold. Like today, it was 15
degrees. Well, that’s to cold for comfort. But we had to go school. First I want to thank you for the present you have
sent me, and to my friends. We are all thankful for what you have done for us. Those presents for all of us is shared by
our block 226. A few days ago we found out that you and the student of your school have donated some books for our Poston
Two School library. I want to thank you and your school for helping us. Our school room is a same kind of barracks we
live in. There is one stove in the room, but only the ones who sit beside the stove gets the heat. My Home Room teachers
name is Miss Witmore. She has been teaching school at Hillo Hawaii for many years. She is a very nice teacher. She is my
core Study teacher too. Our school have Core Study. This study is English combined with history. We have two periods of
this study. Then I’m taking algebra from a Japanese teacher. Next I have Wood Shop in the afternoon. This is also two period
study. My instructor is a Japanese. Well that about all I will write about my school. In our camp, we have games like,
baseball, football, volleyball, basketball etc. Each block has the own team. There are four division of teams, the “AA”,
“A”, “B”, and the “Juniors”. There are about 15 blocks in Poston II. Our block has a team too. Its name is “226 Zeros”.
Our “A” team has the Poston II football championship of 1942. Before the championship game, we had a bon-fire rally. We
sang songs and yelled etc. Then after we took the championship, we had victory dance. And we also had a victory banquet
for the team. Now the basketball game has been opened. Our “A” has won one game already, and out “B” lost one, and our Junior
haven’t played. I think I will close my letter by saying “Adios”. Yours truly, George Ohno
P.S. The magazine you are sending me is still coming. Thank you. Oh yes, well you please tell Mrs. Tougaw thank you for
the Christmas Card she sent me and also tell all the teachers hello and thanks.
